Play on a difficulty level where you can't die, no matter how many enemies attack you at once, and attract as many enemies as you can at a time. Remember that short levels mean more down-time in the loading and end screens, while long levels mean more time walking and fewer bosses. Find a level with a lot of densely-packed enemies or an easy to reach boss, and kill as fast as you can. You can get by with jewelry crafted with rough gems or no gems at all for a while. Before that, you just can't move through levels fast enough to make farming worth it. Also, wait until you can do around 40k damage. Not until level 70- You don't want to farm items which will someday be obsolete.

I'll often leave before the last scraps of gold are gathered, you get most of what you earn up front so the last bits aren't worth much. If not all the mobs in the room died already, I kill the rest while the gold is being gathered. Hit the boss and his mobs with Rapid Fire, as soon as it's done hit Smoke Screen to drop all agro and open all the chests, and then trigger the portal. Drop the traps as I run through the level on dense packs of mobs, the last one I drop just before entering the final room.

I run with Magnetic Trap, Smoke Screen, and Rapid Fire. I think it's definitely more beneficial to not worry about extra chests in the level, get to the end of the level and complete it as quickly as possible, and get out. Opening extra chests in the level I'd only get an extra 20,000-30,000 gold, but completing an extra run I'm getting closer to 80,000. I aim for a 25 second clear, so for every two of your runs I'm almost getting three done. The normal chests in the level are only giving me about 2-3k gold each (with 3,233 extra gold stat) - I seem to average around 80,000 gold per clear though, sometimes more sometimes less. Hey, I used to cast SS up front too, but have since realised that it's much more useful at the end of the level.
